weekend sewing: katie's new dress

so this weekend the husband was gone. i know rotten on father's day weekend. nothing bad happened thank heavens. we went to the pool twice, and cleaned hard core. the boys even mowed the lawn.
all.of.it.
we have a lot of lawn.
i was feeling pretty good about how clean the house finally got that i pulled out the ol sewing machine and started her up. she was getting kind of lonely thinking i was mad at her. but really i've just not been feeling myself. but i made up for it by making this cute little dress i've been meaning to make in the heather ross book: weekend sewing.
instead of fabric i used a t-shirt from walmart. i think it cost $4.50...and i got an 4xl. yup didn't know they made that size but they do.

i cut up the shirt. using the bottom half as the dress part and a little of the top part for the ties.

she likes it a lot. it's perfect for summer.
and when it got a little cool in the evening we paired it up with her hot pink sweater. i told her she looked like strawberry shortcake. she corrected me and said "no, i'm a sen-sen (princess)" and then she continued to twirl.
i'm in a dress making kind of mood. hmmm maybe i'll make another one. just because.
i really love summer. have i mentioned that lately? yeah? well here it is again.
i.love.summer.
i wish we had it all the time.

Just adorable! Such a pretty girl :)

I made one of those for my niece last year and she's probably going to get a few more this summer :)

So cute! I have been addicted to shirring lately. I never knew how easy and fun it was before. She is a doll! and I love the two colors together.

I just made one of these last week from a t-shirt too! My daughter wanted some nightgowns to sleep in so I figured I'd try it and see how it works out, but it is definately too cute to just be a nightgown. I love the way the knit shirs...it's like a dream! Love the color of your dress, and your little girl is adorable!

Katie's dress is almost as adorable cute as she is!!

Shirring seems to be the latest craze in blogland sewing. Guess I have to give it a whirl soon.

I know what you mean.....when people comment on how hot it is, I say "beats a snow storm!". Great idea on using the tee for the cute dress!

I love your dress ideas!!
By the way, how did you do the top? (or do I have to buy the book to find out?
Thanks!

Aw, it's beautiful Vanessa! I definitely think you should make her another one - maybe in something sunshiny, like yellow!

My husband was out of town on Father's Day too. Lame, huh? To make it lamer, there's a lady at church who makes EACH of the dads a pie every Father's Day.

Dadless and Pie-less. It was a sad, sad day.

I tried making one of these the other day but had issues with the elastic thread shirring. I have a Brother top load bobbin. I have read that with the top load to use the bobbin winder, which I did, I also adjust thread tension and had no luck. I even did the method my sewing machine called for with using regular thread and pulling the bobbin strings, I will NEVER do that again LOL. I am so jealous. :(

That is one beautiful little girl. I just get tickled when I visit your blog. The dress is very cute, and I'm loving the pink sweater.

By the way, I can't pass up this opportunity to agree with you about summer and report that we left the US last summer to move (temporarily) to southern Africa, where we've only had a small bit of slightly cool weather, here and there. We'll be returning home in a month -- back to SUMMER! :-)

What a sweet dress, wish I had a grandaughter to make one for. I use to make dresses for my daughter when she was little, but now I have two grandsons and they don't appreciate the sewing the way a daughter does.

that is adorable! I could even use that for winter (it's winter here) the t-shirt idea is genius. Really!
