that time of the year again

nope not tax time...well, yes it's that too... did you get your's done? phew, we did too.
but that's not what i'm talking about.
i'm talking about DERBY RACING TIME. yes, that time of the year when the boys become men and the men become...boys.
sanding, shaping, grinding. painting, drawing, hotglueing. WD-40-ing, graphite powedering, and weighing in...yes it's this time of the year that makes my husband shake with excitement and fear...and bring my boys a hopeful dream of winning and a prayer of not being dead last every single race.
we have two of our three boys racing this year. they got to choose what their design, color and weight was. (the husband thought we should have a dukes of hazard horn put in the orange one)
this week was spent making these bad boys. and trying to create a few new patterns and tutorials.
my house is trashed, i've got spray paint all over my hands, and i've unpicked and re-sewn i don't know how many times.
the house and patterns will have to wait...as tonight is the night we take these cars out and watch through and peeking up behind half closed hands. just to breathe a sigh of relief as we watch our cars not be the slowest one every single time.
here's to not coming home a sore loser.

v and co loves her sponsors. i want this necklace from madison reece designs.

Good Luck!! My daughter's Girl Scout troop did the derby for the first time this year and it was so much fun! My husband was so funny with his scale measuring after putting on each weight-my daughter loved it.

My son isn't a Boy Scout but I remember my brother and dad preparing for the Derby when we were kids. :)

Good luck with your derby! This is the first year in 10 YEARS we weren't in it!! We get two years off and then boy #4 will do it for 3 years, then we'll be done forever!! (after 12 years of it b/c none of my boys ever overlapped!!) Good times. Your cars are really cool looking! My plan in our new home is a display of all the derby cars we've made through the years, like in one of the boy bedrooms or something.
I finished my 9-patch quilt and sent it off to F. the other day. I'm so excited about it!
Take care Vanessa-

Those are some great looking cars! We had a co-ed race in college and built a little too heavy of a car. (We melted lead and poured it into parts of it.) Sadly the people who at the last minute put an angled dumb bell on their block of wood won. Second place wasn't too bad...

Best of luck!

Sweet. As a R.S. presidency, I think we might be planning one with the E.Q. It sounds ridiculously fun to me! Hope it goes/went well!

Good luck with the racing!
I thought I should let you know that your blog is one of my regular haunts, it brightens my day and sometimes makes me laugh out loud (in a good way!)
I am one of those silent blog stalkers, so I thought it was time to come out and say thank you! I've posted a (very small) virtual gift on my blog to say thank you to the people who visit or inspire me, please drop by if you have time!
Thanks again!

Such cool cars!!! We went to our little grandson's first derby a few weeks ago. Question------is WD40 really allowed? We may have to remember that next year if it is. Good luck to your boys!

Oh my...... the memories the pinewood derby brings back. When my youngest son was in 3rd grade, his oldest brother (8th grade) helped him with his car. It came down to a race between him and his middle brother (5th grade). Well, little brother won, much to the dismay of middle son. :)

My 16 year old still has his derby cars lined up in his room! Not so funny our first year when I didn't get the the whole weight thing...

Dukes of Hazzard horn? Awesome.

In Canada, most of us do our taxes as soon as we're able. Consequently, my minuscule return has long been returned and spent. Good luck with yours!

Love the derby!! We still have all of our son's cars too. It is as much fun watching the dads as it is watching the boys! Good luck!

I kinda ♥ the bullets for rocket boosters. That is an awesome idea. Since I have two boys, I can't wait to see what they come up with when it's time for this.
