things i love...

re-purposing old sheetscute little sundress made out of second hand find sheets. this skirt and this quilt were my first projects with old sheets. then i attempted the barcelona skirt pictured above. by far this is my FAVORITE skirt i own.
and then i started making dresses for the little one with old sheets, love this one!
i got all crazy (with the help of my great friend who everyone thinks we're related because we look alike) and made this cute crocheted rug out of old white sheets and with one strip of cute gigham fabric. i think i may try to convince her that we need to make a few more of these (wouldn't they look cute in a bathroom?)
seriously, old sheets are great because they have a finished edge already there so pj's and other projects are easy to finish!

so if you'd passed up sheets before in the second hand store, most likely i've gone right behind you and bought them, but now you know, and won't pass them up next time!

Your idea of using sheets is wonderful! Who would have thought? Also, sheets are a lot cheaper than fabric by the yard. So, I am going to keep my eyes out for some cool sheets, but don't worry, I'm in another state so won't be in competition with you for finding the best ones!
Thanks for all the great ideas, and I love your skirt too!

My mother was a seamstress and used to use old sheets to do a practice run before working with expensive fabric. (Can't remember what that's called, but it has a name.) We had a slightly neurotic rich aunt who never washed sheets and just kept buying new ones so we always had a great supply of old sheets.

She also cheaply redecorated my room for my 16th birthday by purchasing a new comforter, a sheet set, and used a matching sheet set to make curtains and a lampshade all for under $100. I loved those decorations!

Your sheet selections are really cute, too!

ADORABLE! Love the sundress and barcelona skirt. I think I may be buying myself an Amy Butler pattern. What pattern did you use for the sundress?

V...I made those rugs for a friend's mom. She loves it and has one in her bathroom and one in the guest room. They get very addicting (we have one in our little girl's room and one large in the boy's room..square, of course!) and are just so darn cute, especially when you get the sheets for yardsale cheap and the strip of fabric at WallyWorld for under $2/yard!

While your projects are unbelievably cute and clever (as usual), I just can't get over the idea that a couple of big, fat, hairy strangers might have had sex on my kid's pajama pants.

Sorry.

It all started when I went to a friend's house for dinner and she set the table with napkins made from a set of sheets she picked up from the Salvation Army store.

Thought I was gonna vomit right there.

So long story short, the curtains in my room are made out of repurposed sheets...but let it be known that I am the only big, fat, hairy person who's ever done it on those window treatments.

Helps me sleep at night.

So cute! I used to see cute sheets all the time and always passed them up (why would I want someone's used sheets) and now that I want them, there are none to be found!

One of my friends made quilts for all her siblings after her grandma died out of all her old sheets. It's one of her favorites because it reminds her of sleeping over at her grandma's house when she was young. I think it's a great idea. I love the rug and other things too!

Amy, just think about wool - Before it's washed, it can be the filthiest thing imaginable. But I loved your comment, especially the last line!

Absolutely brillant. I know folks that have used sheets as quilt backs but I haven't ever seen them cut up for the front.

I loooove the mostly white crocheted rug. What size strips / hook did you use? Just gorgeous. Makes me want to cut up all my old sheets.
Great project.

Love your blog! It is my first visit. Will send my sister, the sewer in our family, on over! I have a stash of cool old sheets I will turn over to her if she promises me some p.j.s!
Peace,

a couple of you have asked what hook size i used...um it was a monster of a hook it was blue and i think you can get it at walmart. it was my fiend's and i'll have to ask her. but basically if you think the hook is too big to look natural, you've got the RIGHT one!

How about a tutorial for finding the perfect sheet and what makes them the perfect sheet? Please?
