tutorial::how to make a country rustic sign

this tutorial is so darn easy you could do it in your sleep, but here you go, the steps to making your own:
1. get yourself a board, old weathered ones are the best and when you live out in the middle of nowhere that's been around for a century and a half, trust me there are a lot of old barns falling down...anywho...
2. trace with chipboard (letters made out of cardboard, found at craft stores usually in the scrap booking area) onto your board with a pencil.
3. paint your letters: hint: use an angled paint brush and your straight lines will be easier to do.
4. let it completely dry...then take a power sander (i used my palm sander) and go to town on top of your letters.
5. distress some areas more than others, you can even wear away most of the paint here and there. you want it to look like it's been out in weathered conditions so don't be afraid to sand off some parts of your letters... see i told you it was easy!

Okay now that you did a tutorial on it, IT DOES LOOK EVER SO EASY! But I loved the instruction anyway. I would have never known about the angled brush. So thanks the sign is seriously cute and the tutorial is fabulous!

I used to make them by printing out what I wanted on the computer, scribbling pencil on the back, and then tracing hard on top of my letters. It gave me many font options. I love that sign...it makes me want to start decorating right now.

I was going to comment exactly what Ashli just said! I made some really cute signs that way, and the sizes and font possibilities are endless!

Wow you make it look so easy. Now if I can only find an old barn in Southern California.

i love that you painted the individual letters - i thought that maybe they were stencils ... i use carbon paper and print cool fonts from the computer for some of my signs ... i love it!

This sign is awesome - you are so talented and such a natural. If you ever need to brush some of that talent off, you can brush it off in my general direction!

I've made signs like this (the Ashli who commented showed me how!), but never even thought about taking a sander to it - stroke of genius! Love the look - I'm gonna have to go find me a piece of old wood and make a new one!

I'm just going to comment on all the past few posts here -- your children are beautiful and I'm so happy for you that your son is having a good year so far! I'm sure that's such a load off of you and major answer to prayers.

And I have to say - HOW did I not ever get to know you when we both lived in San Luis? I could have been soaking up your inspiration all these years!
